Almost Brand-New
If you follow me, you know we are in the middle of renovating a house.
It has been exciting. It has also been exhausting.
Every decision seems to uncover another decision. Every finished room makes the unfinished ones look a little worse. There is dust, delay, expense, and the occasional moment when we wonder why we started.
Then something changes.
The right color goes on the wall. An old room begins to breathe again. Details that once felt disconnected finally make sense. Slowly, the house starts to become what we believed it could be.
When we are finished, it will look almost brand-new.
Almost.
Because no matter how beautiful the renovation becomes, the house will still be the same house.
Its age will remain in the bones. Its history will stay hidden behind the walls. A careful eye will still find evidence of what came before.
We can change the appearance. We can strengthen what is weak. We can restore what has been neglected.
But we cannot make an old house new.
That is where the comparison to grace ends.
God does not renovate us.
We are not God’s improvement project.
He does not take the old life, repair the worst parts, cover the damage, and make us more presentable.
Scripture says something far more radical.
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
The old life is not hidden beneath fresh paint.
It is gone.
There may still be memories. There may still be scars. There may still be habits that take time to surrender and consequences that take time to heal.
But those things are not proof that the old person is still alive.
They are evidence of how far grace has carried us.
A renovated house may look almost brand-new.
But in Christ, we are not almost new.
We are new.
If you know someone who is still measuring their life by who they used to be, share this with them.
