One of the most dangerous places to be is first place.
There is something about being ahead that makes us feel secure. We can see the road in front of us clearly. The problem is that we have no idea what is happening behind us.
While we are protecting what got us there, others are studying it, improving it, and quietly building what comes next.
At one time, Kodak was almost synonymous with photography. Remarkably, the company helped develop the first digital camera. The future was not hidden from them. It was being built inside their own walls.
But Kodak’s success was tied to film. Fully embracing digital photography threatened the very business that had made the company successful.
Comfort does not always make us lazy. Sometimes it makes us loyal to what used to work.
That happens to companies, churches, and people.
We stop asking difficult questions. We become less curious. We repeat the same routines because they once produced good results. We pray familiar prayers with less expectation. Eventually, yesterday’s success becomes today’s security.
Paul wrote, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”
That warning is directed toward the person who has become certain of their footing.
Success is a gift, but it can also become anesthesia. It can dull the hunger, humility, and urgency that helped us reach that place.
Maybe the question is not whether things are going well.
Maybe the better question is whether we are still growing while they are.
First place is never the finish line.
Sometimes the first sign of decline is the absence of urgency while everything still looks successful.
