Confetti Not Included
As a leader, I shouldn’t expect applause for rescuing my organization from the problem I helped create in the first place.
I am not the hero if I lit the fire.
We all mess up and take wrong turns. If you never do, you’re probably not taking enough risks to make a meaningful impact. But sometimes my worst issues are ones that I created, through neglect, complacency, arrogance, or a shortcut I thought wouldn’t make a difference.
The great leader owns it, fixes it, and seeks a way forward more than a spotlight.
Your team doesn’t follow because you’re flawless. Breaking News: They already know you’re not. But when you lead with honesty and walk in humility, you invite something more profound than mere compliance. You invite trust. And trust moves the team forward even through the worst of fires.
