Conformity
This week, I had a little quiet time to think about Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
We get pulled in a lot of directions. People have opinions about how we should live, what we should believe, and what success should look like.
Culture can pressure us, too. It often tells us what to value, how to speak, what to celebrate, and even how to define ourselves. Sometimes the message is simple: If you are not like this, then you are weird.
And when those expectations come from people we love, they can be hard to ignore. Sometimes we go along just because we don’t want to disappoint them or stand out.
But after a while, we can forget to ask if we even believe what we’re defending.
That passage challenges me too. I need to look at my own views. A renewed mind means being willing to learn, accept correction, and let God show me where I might be wrong.
Following God does not mean blindly rejecting everything around us. It means refusing to let culture, fear, or the need for approval shape us more than God does.
Whose approval am I afraid of losing? Where have I confused fitting in with faithfulness? Where have I allowed someone else’s definition of normal to make me question what God is asking me to be?
I’m trying to give God room to answer before I rush in and fill the silence myself.
