Does It Edify?
We live in a time when almost everyone has something to say.
An opinion. A correction. A clever response. A reason to point out where someone else is wrong.
And sometimes, we are right.
The facts may be on our side. The criticism may be deserved. The words may even be true.
But Scripture gives us a higher standard than truth alone.
Paul wrote, “All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful. All things are expedient, but not all things build up.”
That last phrase matters.
Does it build up?
Before I say it, post it, repeat it, or send it, will these words make anything stronger? Will they bring clarity, wisdom, courage, or grace? Or am I simply adding another brick to the wall between people?
Truth is important, but truth can be carried with care or thrown like a stone.
Correction can restore someone, or it can embarrass them.
Humor can bring joy, or it can wound while everyone else laughs.
Even silence can sometimes edify more than the perfect response.
We have become very skilled at defending what we said. Perhaps we should spend more time examining what our words produced.
Did they heal?
Did they help?
Did they build?
Before we speak, maybe that is the question worth asking.
Does it edify?
