The other day, my wife and I were driving when I noticed a house along the road. It wasn’t very old, and you could tell it had once been beautiful. But for reasons I’ll never know, it had been abandoned.
In a surprisingly short time, that beautiful house had come to look more like the setting of a Hitchcock movie than a home. The yard was overgrown. The exterior was stained and weathered. Nature had begun reclaiming what someone had once worked so hard to build.
There is a word in physics for the natural movement from order toward disorder: entropy.
Leave a house unattended, and it will deteriorate. Leave a garden alone, and the weeds will take it. Ignore a small leak, and it will eventually damage everything around it. The best, most wholesome, and most carefully ordered things in life will begin to decay when no one tends to them.
The same principle reaches far beyond houses and gardens. Marriages can grow distant. Families can lose connection. Organizations can forget their purpose. Character can erode through a hundred small compromises. Faith can become something we remember more than something we live.
Most things do not fall apart all at once. They decline gradually, often so slowly that we hardly notice. A conversation we keep postponing. A prayer life that becomes less consistent. A relationship we assume will always be there. A conviction we stop guarding because it once seemed unshakable.
Hebrews warns us to “give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.”
That is what makes entropy so dangerous. Some of the most valuable things in our lives are never deliberately abandoned. We simply stop tending them.
God has entrusted each of us with something worth preserving. A marriage. A family. A calling. A reputation. A relationship with Him. These things require our attention, our effort, and sometimes our willingness to repair what has already begun to deteriorate.
The good news is that decay does not have to write the final chapter. God is still in the restoration business. He brings order from chaos, beauty from ruin, and life back into places that appear beyond saving.
