I was scrolling social media the other day and came across one of those posts.
You know the kind.
It was about "those people." The ones who always act a certain way. It wasn't hard to tell the post was written with one particular person in mind.
As I read it, I caught myself thinking...
"That's interesting."
Because the person being described sounded an awful lot like the person doing the writing.
I didn't comment. I wasn't offended. Honestly, it just made me wonder.
How often do I do the exact same thing?
Maybe the reason certain behaviors bother us so much is because they're closer to home than we'd like to admit.
It's easy to spot pride when someone else is wearing it.
It's harder to recognize it in the mirror.
Jesus said,
"And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?"
Matthew 7:3 NKJV
I've quoted that verse before.
It's a whole lot easier to quote than it is to live.
The older I get, the more I realize my biggest project isn't fixing everyone else.
It's letting God keep working on me.
Maybe before we post about someone else's shortcomings, we
ought to ask ourselves one uncomfortable question:
Would anyone who knows me think this post was about me?
Sometimes the finger we're pointing has a way of turning back toward us.
