How Tall Is the Pigeon?
The other day I saw a pigeon.
Perched on top of a tall building downtown.
Chest out.
Head thrown back.
From the sidewalk, he looked impressive.
Above traffic.
Above the rush.
Above everyone else.
For a moment, he looked like a king.
Then it hit me.
He wasn’t tall.
He was just standing on something tall.
The building was impressive.
The pigeon was still… just a pigeon.
I’ve confused those two more times than I’d like to admit.
Position can feel like substance.
Momentum can feel like mastery.
A platform can feel like permanence.
But most of what we accomplish
will be barely remembered in fifty years.
The promotions.
The wins.
The applause.
Time has a short memory.
The building will remain.
The pigeon won’t.
That doesn’t make our lives meaningless.
It makes them clarifying.
If what I’m building only elevates me,
it will fade with me.
But if what I build strengthens people,
serves faithfully,
and honors God,
then even when my name is forgotten,
the impact won’t be.
I don’t want to be tall for a moment.
I want to be faithful for a lifetime.

So true
I read a story/reel along the same lines. Little boy saw a plane in the air and remarked to his father about how small it was. The father took him to the airport to see a plane on the ground not in the sky. Little boy was so amazed at the size up close. He couldn’t understand what he was seeing was the same thing he saw in the sky.
