Hype
If I had to sum up the world in one word, it would be hype.
Everything has to grab attention.
And nothing grabs attention anymore unless it’s turned all the way up.
Headlines stretch.
Products overpromise.
Opinions get louder, sharper, more absolute.
Even normal moments get dressed up
like they’re meant to impress.
We’ve learned how to amplify everything.
But somewhere along the way,
we stopped asking if it was true.
Hype works because it feels important.
It creates urgency.
It pulls us in.
But it also distorts.
And it hasn’t stayed out in the world.
It’s found its way into our faith
and into our churches.
Bigger moments.
Stronger reactions.
More intensity.
If it doesn’t move us instantly,
we start to question if it’s real.
There’s a moment in Scripture where a prophet went looking for God in the spectacular.
Wind that tore through mountains.
An earthquake that shook the ground.
Fire that demanded attention.
God wasn’t in any of it.
Then came a whisper.
(1 Kings 19:12)
Easy to miss
if he was still chasing the noise.
But that’s where God was.
I’ve caught myself drifting toward what feels impressive
instead of what actually holds.
But truth doesn’t need help.
It doesn’t perform.
It doesn’t compete.
It just is.
And a life built on what is real
may not get attention.. but it holds.
So I’m learning to live less impressed
and more grounded.
Less drawn to what’s elevated,
more anchored in what’s true.
Because hype fades.
Truth doesn’t.
