Idols
When we hear the word idolatry, most of us picture something ancient. A golden calf. A carved image. Pagan rituals around an altar beneath a foreign sky.
It feels primitive and distant, easy to condemn because it does not look much like our lives.
But idols did not disappear when people stopped carving them from stone. They simply became harder to recognize.
An idol can sit in the driveway or fit in the palm of your hand. It can be a career, a bank account, a house, a relationship, a platform, or the approval of people whose opinions were never meant to carry that much weight.
For some, it may even be a political party, a movement, or a president.
Anything can become an idol when we begin asking it to give us what only God can provide: security, identity, meaning, hope, even salvation.
The golden calf was made from the gold the Israelites carried out of Egypt. God placed something valuable in their hands, and they reshaped the blessing into a substitute for Him.
We still do that.
God gives us influence, and we begin living for attention. He gives us resources, and we trust the gift more than the Giver. He gives us relationships, and we expect another person to complete us. He gives us leaders, and we begin treating them like saviors.
The danger is that an idol is not always evil. More often, it is something good that has been given a place it was never meant to occupy.
We know something has become an idol when losing it frightens us more than drifting from God. Criticism of it feels personal. Loyalty to it asks us to excuse what we once knew was wrong.
An idol may promise security, but eventually it demands devotion. It takes our time, our peace, our loyalty, and sometimes our integrity.
The first commandment was not given because God needed His ego protected. It was given because anything else we place on the throne will eventually fail beneath the weight of our expectations.
Maybe the question is not whether we have ever created an idol. Most of us have.
The question is whether we are willing to recognize it and remove it from the throne.
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
