Just Listen

I have always been a doer.

I am quick to act. Quick to fix things. Quick to make a decision and move on to the next thing. I stay busy, probably too busy. You will rarely find me sitting still for very long.

For years, I considered that one of my greatest strengths.

Now I am beginning to realize it can also be a weakness.

There is a danger in always doing. We can become so busy solving problems, making plans, and trying to move things forward that we miss what is happening right in front of us.

Sometimes people do not need us to fix anything.

They just need us to listen.

To hear what they are actually saying, not just the words they use. To notice the hesitation. The frustration. The hurt they are trying not to show.

I am learning the same thing in my relationship with God.

I can pray for direction and then immediately start making plans. I can ask God to lead me while I continue walking in the direction I had already chosen.

Sometimes I need to stop talking.

Stop planning.

Stop trying to make something happen.

And just listen.

Samuel said, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

That sounds simple, but for people like me, it is not.

Listening requires patience. It requires humility. It means admitting that I may not already know what needs to happen next.

There is a time to work. A time to build. A time to move quickly.

But there is also a time to be still long enough to hear the voice we have been asking to guide us.

I am still learning this.

Sometimes the most important thing I can do is nothing at all.

Just listen.
