Music has been a constant companion through my life.
It was there in childhood, some of my first memories were singing on a piano bench with my mom and dad. It was a friend in the pain of disappointment, when dreams fell apart in my hands. And in my happiest moments… all of them filled with music.
So many times, music became the lyric to what I didn’t know how to say.
Even my calling, over 40 years of serving, has been wrapped in song. Not just on stages, under bright lights, but more often in tiny rooms, around a bedside, and in the still, unseen moments when worship was my lifeline.
After all these years, what still amazes me is this:
Every song I’ve ever loved.
Every soaring melody.
Every aching minor fall.
Every groove that made me dance and every lyric that made me cry, They all began with just twelve notes.
Twelve.
Twelve tones. That’s it.
And once the composer chooses a key and a mode, the options narrow even further. Yet the possibilities? Endless.
So what makes the difference between a song that speaks directly to your soul and music you can’t turn off fast enough?
Arrangement.
It’s simply where the notes are placed. The tension between the major and minor. The pause before the resolve. The notes that accompany the melody that turn it into something transcendent.
And maybe, just maybe, life works the same way.
We don’t get to choose our starting point. The resources, limitations, and tools we have are often handed to us before we even begin.
But how we steward what we’ve been given? That’s where the beauty is born.
So don’t worry if life doesn’t feel like a symphony right now. Sometimes the most beautiful music begins as a simple hum in the dark.
It just needs time…
And a little work on the arrangement.
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
Ecclesiastes 3:11
If this encouraged you, would you share it with one friend who might need it too?
