I walked outside this week and noticed our flowers. They weren’t quite as perky as normal. The grass wasn’t that brilliant shade of green. Everything had this dull look to it.
Immediately I thought, “Wow, we need rain.”
Then my mind went back to spring, when it seemed like it rained every single day. I was getting frustrated with that, too.
Apparently, I’m a difficult customer.
I wanted the green grass and the pretty flowers. I just had some strong opinions about the watering schedule.
The same thing I was tired of then was exactly what I was hoping for now. The rain hadn’t changed. My appreciation for it had.
I wonder how often I do that with God. Enjoy what He provides while complaining about the way He provides it. Ask Him to grow something in my life, then question why the conditions aren’t more comfortable.
Standing there looking at those flowers, it was pretty obvious that my preference for sunshine wasn’t the only thing worth considering.
Maybe I could remember that the next time I’m explaining to God how things ought to go.
Let it rain, Lord. I’ll try not to offer so much supervision.
