No Off Record
I heard someone say something recently that stuck with me.
They were speaking publicly and made the comment:
“I wish this wasn’t being recorded so I could really say what I want to say.”
And honestly, that made me sad.
Because somewhere along the way, we’ve normalized the idea that our “real thoughts” belong behind closed doors.
That truth changes depending on the audience.
That character can be edited based on who might hear it later.
But I keep thinking about Jesus.
He never seemed afraid of being overheard.
Never pulled the disciples aside and said,
“Okay, now off the record…”
Even His hardest teachings were spoken openly.
To crowds.
To critics.
To religious leaders.
To anyone willing to listen.
There was consistency in Him.
Not performance.
Not image management.
Not one version for the public and another for private conversations.
Just truth.
I’m not talking about wisdom or discretion.
Not every conversation belongs on a stage.
But there’s a difference between privacy and duplicity.
One protects intimacy.
The other protects deception.
And I think a lot of damage in this world starts when people become comfortable saying things in secret that they would never want standing beside them in the light.
Maybe integrity is when our private words and public words begin to sound the same.
Not polished.
Not perfect.
Just honest enough that we wouldn’t panic if someone pressed record.
Lord, help me remember that an ignorant statement isn’t any less ignorant just because only a smaller, like-minded group hears it.
If I need darkness to say it,
maybe I need to rethink saying it at all.
That made me think...
Have we become too comfortable creating separate versions of ourselves depending on the room we’re in?
