Not The Rock
So many times, we look at people who seem to have it all figured out.
They’ve been successful.
They’ve lasted.
They’ve stayed standing longer than most.
And without realizing it, we start to turn them into something they aren’t.
We elevate.
We project.
We assume.
Because we all want someone to look up to.
We all want proof that it’s possible.
But reality is usually far less polished.
Those people we admire are just people.
They carry doubts.
They wrestle with fear.
They make mistakes they never post about.
They struggle with many of the same things we do.
Sometimes the exact same ones.
What we see is the outcome.
What we don’t see is the cost.
Longevity doesn’t mean clarity.
Success doesn’t mean peace.
Visibility doesn’t mean strength.
It just means they kept going.
People were never meant to carry the weight of our admiration.
It’s more than anyone can hold for long.
That kind of reverence belongs somewhere else.
My dad used to sing a song when I was growing up:
On Christ the solid rock I stand.
All other ground is sinking sand.
That lyric still holds.
People make poor foundations.
They were never meant to be the rock.
Admire people.
Learn from them.
Be grateful for them.
Just don’t build your life on them.
