The morning after the election, half the country exhales. The other half briefly considers a new confederacy.
I have a rule about keeping politics out of this blog. I’m keeping it. You’ll have to get your blood pressure up somewhere else.
But it’s the swinging that intrigues me.
Red, blue, some unfortunate purple combination. We’re forever watching something we thought was settled become unsettled again.
I’m generally optimistic about it. Things swing too far, people feel the consequences, corrections come. Then sometimes the correction needs correcting. This plays out over and over, decade after decade.
What catches my attention, though, is how often people on opposite ends start sounding alike just two years apart. Almost word for word. Apparently, nobody throws away the script.
Same certainty. Same outrage. Same inability to imagine that a reasonable person could see it differently.
And with every cycle, I find more reason to come back to the Gospel.
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8.
I once heard that mostly as reassurance. But lately, it feels like a call to examine what keeps changing in me.
My patience, for instance. My generosity toward people whose conclusions irritate me. How quickly I can turn somebody into a demographic and feel excused from understanding them.
The pendulum will swing again. I expect that.
I’d like to still recognize my own spirit when it does.
