Sea of Rules
Have you ever stopped to think about how many laws we live under?
The U.S. government has nearly 50,000 federal laws on the books.
And more than 300,000 regulations are stacked on top.
Every year, more are added.
Federal. State. City. Layer upon layer.
Why so many?
Because passing a law makes us feel like we’re addressing a problem.
It makes us feel safer.
It gives the illusion of progress.
And if we’re honest, even the best of us have broken some law in the past month.
I might have a ticket to prove it… allegedly :)
Of course, laws have their place.
God Himself gave the Ten Commandments.
Boundaries matter.
They protect.
They guide.
But they also bring pressure.
The fear of taking a wrong step.
The fear of making a wrong turn.
The fear of falling short.
And that’s where the limits show.
A law can restrain me, but it cannot change me.
It can reveal what’s broken, but it cannot heal.
I’ve known people who made life all about the rules.
Inspecting. Watching. Measuring every step.
Quick to set others straight when they falter.
But the law alone never brought peace and contentment.
It never transformed a heart.
That’s the difference between the sea of rules we drown in
and the grace of God that pulls us out.
The law can keep me in line.
But only grace can set me free.
“Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law.”
— Galatians 2:16
