This week I walked up to the house we are remodeling. With everybody coming and going, I put in one of those electronic deadbolts.
I love it.
Punch in the code. Little beep. Door opens. No key required.
Very 2026.
Except somebody had locked the other lock.
So there I stood, outside my own house, confidently entering the correct code over and over again as if the fourth attempt might somehow convince the door that I was, in fact, the owner.
It did not.
Apparently all my technology had been defeated by a fairly ordinary piece of brass.
I started laughing because that feels a lot like life.
I like codes. Formulas. Cause and effect. Do this, get that. Work hard. Make good decisions. Treat people right. Pray. Plan. Think it through.
Surely the door opens.
Except sometimes it doesn’t.
There is another lock you didn’t know about. Somebody changed something. The plan that made perfect sense yesterday suddenly doesn’t work today.
And I really don’t like that.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” NKJV
I believe that verse.
I just occasionally wish God would send me the updated access code.
Maybe faith is partly accepting that I am never going to have every key.
I can plan. I should plan.
But sometimes I am still going to end up standing on the porch wondering how in the world I got locked out of my own house.
