The Doorway
The Doorway
I do this more often than I care to admit. I leave one room knowing exactly what I need, walk through a doorway, and stop. Whatever seemed so clear a few seconds earlier is gone. Sometimes I have to retrace my steps before the thought returns.
There is actually a name for this. Researchers call it the doorway effect. Our minds tend to organize life into scenes, and crossing a threshold can signal that one scene has ended and another has begun. As the mind adjusts to the new surroundings, the thought connected to the previous room can become harder to retrieve.
I wonder if we sometimes do the same thing with God.
As Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land, Moses warned them about forgetting. They had depended on God through the wilderness for food, water, protection, and direction. Now they were about to enter a place where life would become more settled. They would eat until they were satisfied, build homes, and watch their possessions increase.
Moses understood that hardship had kept their need for God in front of them. A full table could make that need easier to overlook.
I have seen this in my own life. When the diagnosis is uncertain, prayer comes naturally. When the money is tight or the future feels unsettled, I pay closer attention. I listen more carefully. I recognize how little control I actually have.
Then God answers. The pressure eases, life becomes manageable again, and I move on to the next thing. I never intended to forget what He did. I simply walked into a new season and failed to carry the memory with me.
Perhaps that is why Scripture tells us so often to remember. Remembering keeps yesterday’s faithfulness alive in today’s circumstances. It allows us to enjoy what God has given us without losing the dependence we learned while waiting for it.
Some of us may be standing in a room we once prayed desperately to enter. The answer came. The door opened. Life changed.
Enjoy the new room. Be grateful for it. But every now and then, look back through the doorway and remember how you got there.
