The Enemy of My Enemy
During World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union fought on the same side.
They were allies.
But they were never truly aligned.
They shared a common enemy.
Adolf Hitler.
That was enough to stand shoulder to shoulder for a time.
But when the war ended, the alliance unraveled almost immediately.
The Cold War followed.
Because agreement about who the enemy is
is not the same as sharing the same convictions.
I notice the same pattern playing out all around us.
Politics.
Churches.
Friendships.
Two people find themselves on the same side of a fight and assume they are on the same side of everything. But shared opposition can create the illusion of unity. Real unity is built on something deeper.
Truth.
Conviction.
A shared understanding of what is good.
Jesus never gathered people around a common enemy.
He gathered them around truth.
Maybe today is a good day to pause and look around.
Who am I aligned with?
People who share my enemies.
Or people who share my convictions.
Those are not always the same.
