The Enemy’s Delight
Screwtape once said that the easiest path to destruction is not rebellion.
It’s distraction.
Not the loud defiance of God, but the easy drift away from Him.
Not a fiery hatred of all things holy, but the slow numbing of the mind to things unholy.
If C.S. Lewis wrote The Screwtape Letters today,
the demons would not tempt us with heresy.
They would hand us a phone.
They would fill our feeds with outrage disguised as information.
With opinions disguised as truth.
With endless connections that leave us lonelier than before.
They would celebrate our busyness.
They would praise our endless productivity.
They would lie to us that scrolling is rest and arguing is God’s work.
Their goal would not be to make us evil.
Just preoccupied.
Too preoccupied to pray.
Too preoccupied to think.
Too preoccupied to love well.
They would want us to be solid in our opinions and yet hollow in our faith.
Always reacting, never reflecting.
Always speaking, rarely listening.
Hell doesn’t need our loyalty.
It only needs our attention.
And all the while, heaven is still calling softly,
if we would only look up.
Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10
