I was watching Tennessee football Saturday. First game of the season, a true freshman at quarterback, and his first drive ends with a touchdown pass.
Well, that settles it. We might win the SEC.
Give a Tennessee fan one good possession and we can have the entire season worked out before the commercial break. Furman, of course, isn’t Georgia or Alabama. But we can discuss that after the replay.
I can do the same thing in business. Something works once, and
I’m ready to call it a strategy. In my personal life, one good week can convince me I’ve finally developed discipline. Apparently, I require very little evidence when the conclusion is one I like.
Ecclesiastes 7:8 says, “The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.”
That pairing catches me. Patience seems like something we need when things are going badly. But it takes patience to let a good beginning remain a beginning, especially when I’m already telling myself how the rest of the story goes.
Can I enjoy a little success and remain curious about what God still has to teach me? I’m wondering how much I stop listening once I think I have something figured out.
Celebrate the touchdown. But there’s another drive coming.
