My mom always had her good dishes. They sat in her china cabinet but never left. I mean NEVER. There was no event special enough for those dishes.
I’m not sure who she was expecting, but they never showed..
When I think back on some of my fondest childhood memories, so many happened around the table with the people I loved most. I still remember the stories. The laughs. The irreplaceable dishes prepared by people who aren’t here anymore.
Those are the meals that you can't really have again, even if somebody wrote down the recipe.
I doubt any of us knew, while we were passing the food, how much those evenings would mean someday.
Jesus taught us to pray for daily bread. Right there between Thy will be done and forgive us our debts, He made room for dinner. Maybe we’ve underestimated the blessing of having food to pass and someone to pass it to.
That makes me wonder what qualifies as a special occasion. We had people we loved gathered around a table, sharing what someone had taken the time to prepare. I’d say that qualified.
Use the good dishes. The people sitting at your table are occasion enough.
