The Ingredient
For much of my life, I learned to chase the polished. I learned how to engineer the best experience, communicate with clarity, and build something that would appeal to a broad range of people.
There is nothing wrong with that. Excellence matters. Details matter. Presentation matters. But I have learned that those things, by themselves, do not turn good into exceptional.
There is another ingredient.
Credibility.
I have spent most of my life around businesses, churches, and organizations. At first glance, many of them look remarkably similar. They have talented people, capable leaders, compelling vision, and carefully built strategies. Then time begins to separate them.
The exceptional ones earn something that cannot be purchased, staged, or manufactured. People believe them.
Their words carry weight because their actions have carried those words for years. When they make a promise, people do not spend much time wondering whether it will happen. They begin making plans around it because experience has taught them that the promise means something.
When credible leaders make difficult decisions, people may not always agree, but they usually understand where those decisions came from. Their values are familiar. Their convictions have been tested. Their response under pressure is not a complete surprise.
Credibility is built through ordinary moments repeated over time. It is found in the phone call that gets returned, the commitment that is honored, the mistake that is admitted, and the employee who receives the same respect after a failure as before it. It is found when a customer discovers that the values in the brochure still exist after the sale.
No single decision creates credibility. It comes from years of moments in which your character and your words continue to tell the same story.
That is also why credibility is so valuable. It takes a long time to build and very little time to damage.
Scripture says, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.” Proverbs 10:9
Integrity is credibility lived out over time. It is choosing the same path when no one is watching that you would choose if everyone were watching.
Talent may open doors. Vision may gather people. Credibility gives them a reason to stay.
Perhaps that is the ingredient we overlook most often. We spend so much energy trying to become more impressive when the deeper work is becoming more believable.
