I love this quote by Stephen Covey.
“The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing.”
It’s one of those phrases that sounds obvious until you try to live by it.
It’s true in faith.
It’s true in leadership.
And it’s absolutely true in business.
Here’s some free business advice:
Success isn’t complicated.
You find a need.
You meet it.
If the need is real and your solution is good enough, you’ll grow.
You’ll be successful.
Sure, the details matter.
And there will always be challenges.
But most of the time, businesses don’t fail because the problem was too big.
They fail because they forgot what problem they were trying to solve.
They lost focus.
Started chasing too many things.
Stopped asking the right questions.
Started listening to every voice in the wind.
And somewhere along the way, the main thing slipped out of sight.
They forgot the first step of the success equation. The need.
Every organization, even great ones, will eventually go through it. You'll wake up to find yourself mired in the muck of petty distractions, losing sight of the deeper purpose. Your team starts to turn on each other because they lack a shared vision. That is, until a great leader refocuses the team on what is truly important.
So here’s your reminder, and mine:
Don’t get so busy that you forget what you’re building.
Don’t get so sidetracked that you forget who you’re serving.
Clarity is everything. Focus is power.
Keep the main thing the main thing.
