The Myth of Me
The Myth of Me
I have heard people say, “I only answer to me. It is my life, and I will live it however I want.”
I understand the sentiment. We value freedom. We want to make our own choices and chart our own course.
But the idea itself is painfully shortsighted.
None of us lives only for ourselves.
The decisions I make today affect my wife, my children, my grandchildren, and my entire family. They shape the people I lead, the people who trust me, and everyone who has ever allowed my life to influence theirs.
Every choice carries farther than we think.
The way I use my time. The things I pursue. The commitments I make. The habits I allow to form. The way I respond under pressure. Even the things I decide no longer deserve my attention.
None of it exists in isolation.
A life is built slowly, one ordinary decision at a time. Those decisions become patterns. Patterns become character. Character becomes influence. And influence becomes legacy.
To be honest, I have not always carried that responsibility the way I should have. There have been times when I made decisions based only on what seemed right for the moment, without considering where they might lead or who else might be affected.
But yesterday is gone.
Grace does not allow us to rewrite the past, but it does give us another morning.
Our actions today can build our legacy or destroy it. Every day places the decision before us again.
Who will I choose to be today?
Not only for me.
For the people who depend on me. For those who are watching. For the generations who may one day inherit the example I am setting now.
Someone else is always living in the wake of the life we choose.
