The Parts You’ll Never See
Last night I had the chance to sit for a few minutes
and talk with an elder who made a major impact on me
and on countless others.
We talked about life.
About people.
About the years behind him.
And I found myself wondering
how much of what he poured into others
he never got to see.
Because I’m one of those results.
I remember as a teenager
he came to me during a youth service
and told me that God had a plan for me.
He prayed with me.
There were things I was going through in that moment
that he could never have known.
But what he said
and the way he showed up
made a bigger impact on me
than he could have ever realized.
There were things he said
years ago
that shaped how I think today.
Moments he probably forgot
that I carried with me.
Selfless service he demonstrated
became a reference point
long after I stopped being around him regularly.
I doubt he remembers most of it.
But I do.
And it made me realize something.
Most of what we pour into people
happens beyond our view.
A conversation we barely remember
might steady someone years later.
A quiet example
might become someone else’s foundation.
A small moment
might turn into a defining one
in someone else’s story.
We don’t get updates on those things.
No metrics.
No closure.
No clear line back to us.
If I’m honest
that used to bother me.
I wanted to know it mattered.
I wanted to see the impact.
But sitting there last night
I realized something different.
The impact was real
even if it was unseen.
And maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be.
Because if we needed to see the result
we’d stop giving when it got quiet.
We’d measure what can’t be measured
and miss what matters most.
So I’m learning to pour anyway.
To say the thing.
To show up the right way.
To live it out consistently.
Not because I’ll see the outcome.
But because someone might.
And years from now
in a moment I’ll never be part of
it might matter more than I know.
And that’s enough.
Thank you, Ron Brown, for pouring into the lives of countless people.
I’m one of them.
