THE PUMPKIN PARABLE
I walked past a row of pumpkins.
Their faces glowed against the dark,
each one flickering with its own small fire.
It made me wonder.
How something so bright
begins with so much breaking.
Before the light ever shines,
something has to be opened.
Cut. Emptied.
The hollow space becomes the home of the flame.
God works like that, too.
He opens what we protect.
He carves away what cannot stay.
He reaches into the places we’d rather keep untouched
and makes room for His light to live.
In the carving, it feels uncomfortable.
It feels like loss,
but it is really love.
Because the carving marks are not signs of ruin.
They are proof that we were chosen.
Chosen to carry something sacred.
And when His presence fills the hollow space,
the same work that once caused discomfort,
becomes the reason His glory shines through.
So when the night feels heavy
and the chill begins to settle in,
don’t fear the emptiness.
That’s where the fire will overcome the darkness.
And send out light so those around us can clearly see.

This is fabulous! What a beautiful, insightful spin on Jack-o-lanterns. I’ll never look at one the same way again, but rather as a mirror!
