The Same Room
I was scrolling this week when a photograph caught my attention. It had been taken in a courtroom. A mother and father stood beside a young boy, with a judge behind them.
My first thought was that something terrible must have happened. Courtrooms usually enter our imagination through tragedy. We associate them with accusations, custody battles, consequences, and loss.
But then I noticed their faces.
Everyone was smiling. A few people had tears in their eyes, but they were happy tears. The boy looked almost giddy. This family had not come before the judge because something was being taken away. They were there because an adoption was being finalized. The judge’s signature meant that the child standing before him now had a permanent home, a family, and a name that belonged to him.
The same room that often announces guilt was announcing belonging.
I could not stop thinking about that.
Scripture tells us that we have been adopted into the family of God through Jesus Christ. We come before a righteous Judge with no ability to argue our own innocence. Yet because of Christ, the verdict is not merely forgiveness. God does something even more extraordinary. He brings us into His family.
“In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 1:5
Grace does more than clear the record. It changes our name. It gives us an inheritance. It takes those who were once separated from God and welcomes them home as sons and daughters.
Perhaps that is why the photograph moved me. I had mistaken the setting for a place of sorrow because I did not yet understand what the judge was about to declare.
Sometimes the same room where we expect judgment becomes the place where grace announces that we belong.
And there is every reason in the world to be happy.
If this encouraged you, share it with someone who may need the reminder today.
