While writing my recent post, The Sock Problem,
I asked my wife to read it before I posted.
Here’s something you should know about us:
We see the world very differently.
She thinks in black and white.
I live in the grey.
She thrives on clarity.
I tend to explore nuance.
For her, a thing is either true or it’s not.
For me, some truths are measured by their meaning, not their mechanics.
So when she got to the part where I said that I pack extra socks, she stopped.
“Wait… no you don’t.”
“I meant it metaphorically,” I told her.
She didn’t buy it.
Borderline lie, she said.
And you know what? She’s not wrong.
That’s how she’s wired.
Truth is concrete. Clear. Literal.
It bothered her because she values integrity, and I admire that.
But here’s what’s beautiful:
We need both.
If everyone were like me, we’d live in a land of metaphors and maybes.
If everyone were like her, we’d miss the poetry in the fog.
Rembrandt painted in shadow.
Monet painted in light.
Beethoven bent the rules.
The Beatles rewrote them.
Each brought a different lens.
Each shaped the world.
So maybe the goal isn’t to change how others see.
It’s to learn how to see through their eyes.
Maybe a better world isn’t one where we agree on everything…
But one where we appreciate what the other brings to the table.
Even if it’s just about packing extra socks, or not.
If this encouraged you, would you share it with one friend who might need it too?
