The Way Back
Most people don’t walk away on purpose.
They don’t leave in a rebellious rage.
It’s rarely a dramatic exit.
Life becomes a blur.
Days stack up.
Convictions don’t vanish, they just lose the weight they once carried.
Distance doesn’t show up all at once.
It grows over time.
More often than not, the place we end up feels miles away, even though we got there one small step at a time.
What I notice in Scripture is how uncomplicated the way back usually is.
No ladder to climb.
No speech to deliver.
No debt to work off.
Just a turn.
“Return to me, and I will return to you.”
Malachi 3:7
That isn’t a negotiation.
It’s direction.
God doesn’t say clean it all up first.
He doesn’t ask for an explanation.
He simply says come back.
The prodigal rehearsed his apology.
The father didn’t need it.
I’ve learned that restoration rarely begins with a clear path forward.
It begins with honesty.
Acknowledging the distance rather than defending it.
The way back isn’t dramatic.
It’s intentional.
A prayer that isn’t impressive.
A pause long enough to notice God again.
One small step pointed the right way.
Life only moves forward.
But direction can still change.
And grace has never been slow to meet us on the way back.
