What’s your most precious possession?
Not your car.
Not your house.
Not even your bank account.
Your most precious possession is time.
I’ve mentioned before how much I love football. Pro ball places a magnifying glass on the progression of time.
The average NFL career lasts only 3 years. Running backs get just 2 1/2 years. By age 26, most players are retired, an age that still feels like the starting line in real life.
It’s shocking when you think about it. In their own minds, they’re still young. But step out on the field with players just a few years younger, and suddenly age shows up in sharp contrast.
That’s the cruel honesty of time.
It doesn’t slow down because we want it to.
And it never gives back what it’s taken.
Money can be lost and earned again.
Possessions can be broken and replaced.
Even relationships can be restored after years apart.
But time is different.
Once it’s spent, it's gone forever.
No one can give you more of it.
No power on earth can buy it back.
And yet, we live as if it’s endless.
We scroll it away.
We take days for granted.
We crowd our calendars and wonder why we still feel empty.
We tell ourselves we’ll “use time better” someday.
But every tick of the clock is a withdrawal from an account that will one day hit zero.
No extensions. No grace period. No second chance.
When we’re young, it feels like forever.
But forever is an illusion.
The years pass, the seasons shift, and suddenly what felt infinite is running out.
So the real question isn’t “How much time do I have left?”
The real question is, “What am I doing with the time I hold in my hands right now?”
Because you only get one shot.
Make it count.
