Unconditionally
I’ve had the privilege of watching a certain man of God for many years.
He never stood out for being flashy.
Not necessarily for being eloquent.
He stood out because of how he treats people.
He has a quiet strength.
The kind that doesn’t need the spotlight.
The kind that sees something others miss.
His greatest gift is almost hidden in plain sight.
He sees the good in people.
Not because those around him are flawless.
Not because he’s blind to weakness or sin.
But because he chooses where to look.
There is an art to it.
The art of refusing to let someone’s worst moment define them.
The art of celebrating what’s strong instead of magnifying what’s broken.
The art of believing that a person’s story is still being written.
I’ve seen him lean in with kindness when others pulled away.
I’ve heard him speak encouragement when criticism would have been easier.
I’ve watched him give people another chance when most would have given up.
He showed me that people often rise to the level of our belief in them.
Choosing to see the good isn’t about ignoring reality.
It’s about choosing a heavenly reality.
It’s about remembering that every person still bears the image of God,
no matter how dimly it flickers.
When I look at people through that lens, something shifts in me.
It softens my heart.
It teaches me patience.
It makes me slower to judge and quicker to forgive.
And it reminds me of how Jesus looks at me.
Not blind to my failings.
But unwilling to let them be the headline.
He sees the possibility.
He sees the redemption.
He sees the good.
Jesus died for me, knowing how many times I would fail.
Even still, He proved with his life what I was worth to him.
If Jesus could love me like that,
how can I withhold grace from anyone else?
Some call him Bishop.
Some call him Pop.
But I’m thankful I can also call him mentor, teacher, and friend.
Thank you, Bobby and Diane Beecham, for showing me how to love people unconditionally.
I will never look at people the same way because of it.
