When you hear the word value, what comes to mind?
For many people, it’s cheap. A bargain. The lowest price.
But that’s not really value.
I’ve learned that some of the best values in my life have been the things that cost me the most.
A good mattress costs more than a cheap one, but if it helps you sleep well for ten years, it was a bargain.
A reliable car costs more than one that’s always in the repair shop.
Hiring the right employee is more expensive than hiring the cheapest one, but one great person can accomplish what several average ones never will.
Real value isn’t about spending less.
It’s about getting more.
More life. More peace. More joy. More usefulness. More years. More impact.
The same is true spiritually.
Following Christ costs us something. Jesus never hid that fact. It requires surrender, forgiveness, humility, and sometimes giving up things we would rather keep.
But what we receive is infinitely greater than what we give.
Jesus said, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44 (NKJV)
The world teaches us to ask, “What’s the cheapest way?”
Maybe the better question is, “What’s the greatest value?”
Sometimes the things that cost the most end up giving us the most.
