What Gets In
Most things in life don’t sink us outright.
Pressure isn’t the problem.
Pain isn’t the problem.
Even storms aren’t always the problem.
Ships are built to live in rough water.
They fail when the water crosses a boundary.
When what was meant to stay outside
finds its way inside.
I’ve learned the same is true for people.
Disappointment will come.
Criticism will come.
Loss will come.
Fear will knock loudly.
The real question isn’t whether these things surround me.
It’s whether I allow them in.
What I rehearse.
What I believe.
What I carry long after the moment has passed.
Isaiah writes,
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.”
Not spared from the water.
Not lifted above it.
But held steady within it.
Faith isn’t pretending the waves aren’t real.
It’s choosing what is allowed to settle into the heart.
Some things can surround me
without defining me.
Some things can press against me
without possessing me.
Guard what gets in.
Because strength isn’t about avoiding the water.
It’s about staying afloat in it.
