Who’s Teaching Who?
Almost nothing matters more than being part of your kids’ lives.
But somewhere along the way, we forget how much they’re part of ours.
We talk about influencing them,
guiding them,
and teaching them.
And yes, that’s part of it.
But if we are paying attention, they are influencing us too.
We recently took three of our grands to Disney.
Watching them experience life without all the weight we tend to carry was something sacred.
There is no question that I learned more from them than they did from me.
When I was tempted to judge, they were compassionate.
When I saw a different social status, race, or background, they saw a playmate.
When I was weary, I let it cloud the joy.
When they were weary, they still danced in the rain.
They reminded me that wonder still exists.
That joy is a choice, not a circumstance.
That sometimes faith looks a lot like a child holding your hand,
pulling you toward the light when you have forgotten how to see it.
Parents and grandparents alike, we were never meant to only pour into them.
God designed it to flow both ways.
Because sometimes the lesson isn’t in what we are teaching.
It’s in what we are still learning.
