Wildflowers
If you’ve spent much time in the western states, you’ve probably seen hillsides covered in wildflowers. On our last trip, I was riding my motorcycle when we came around a bend and the landscape suddenly opened up before us.
It was breathtaking.
Thousands upon thousands of wildflowers stretched across the hillsides. With no windshield separating me from the moment, the fragrance filled the air. It wasn’t just something you saw. It was something you experienced.
As I rode through that valley, I couldn’t stop thinking about how all of that beauty came to be.
No one planted each flower exactly where it stood. No one walked those hills arranging colors or deciding where every stem should grow. Someone simply prepared the conditions. The soil was right. The season came. The rain fell. Then the flowers did what they were created to do.
That made me wonder how much of my own life is spent trying to control things that were never meant to be controlled.
As leaders, parents, spouses, and friends, we often believe our job is to manage every outcome. We want to direct every conversation, solve every problem, and shape every result.
But maybe our greatest responsibility isn’t control.
Maybe it’s cultivation.
Creating an environment where trust can grow. Where character is valued. Where grace is extended. Where people have room to become who God created them to be.
The same is true in our walk with Christ. Spiritual growth isn’t manufactured. We can’t force the fruit of the Spirit. We simply stay rooted in Him, tend the condition of our hearts, and allow Him to produce what only He can.
The wildflowers reminded me that day that beauty rarely comes from control.
It comes from preparing the ground and trusting what God does with it.
Perhaps that’s what someone needed to hear today.
Stop trying to control every flower.
Plant good seeds. Tend the soil. Trust the season.
The rest has a way of taking care of itself.
